Portfolio Features

Even young students can learn how to take charge of their learning. Level 1 lets them:

  • Add a reading response
  • Reflect on developing abilities

Level 1 is geared towards beginning readers in grades 1 & 2 (Cycle One in Quebec). The interface design, as well as the type of interaction, are simplified and specially tailored for young learners. There is an embeded audio recorder so that students can record themselves reading and then reflect on it. Once a reading has been recorded and saved as an entry, two possibilities appear: "Response" and "Reflection." Here, students answer specific questions regarding the literature read (Response) and the their own reading skills (Reflection). There are built-in Response and Reflection questions (which can be read aloud), but teachers are encouraged and can add their own. An image may also be linked to the entry. This encourages students to express their understanding in more than one medium.

There is also a simple writing module for young students who are able to read and write and would like to experiment with that within the familiar Level 1 environment. Here, ePEARL supplies a text editor with basic word processing features where students can type their first writing endeavors. Once a writing has been saved, one new possibility will appear "Reflection." This will allow a user to assign a specific question that will prompt the student to reflect on her writing skills and strategies. An image may also be linked to the entry.
